GUNS OFF THE STREETS

Created King County's protection order court and kept it open for weapons-surrender hearings after most counties stopped. Has helped remove hundreds, if not thousands, of firearms from dangerous offenders who are not legally allowed to possess weapons.

FUNDING FOR INTEPRETERS

Chaired King County's Interpreter Committee for about two years and co-led a statewide task force to secure funding for rural courts, where one trial can exhaust an entire county's interpreter budget.

COURTHOUSE SECURITY

Worked to improve courthouse security in King County and raised statewide attention to gaps elsewhere. Each county maintains its own courthouse, and just over half statewide use metal detectors.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Helped to lead two State AI Task Forces, helping the bench and legal profession develop guiding principles so technology serves justice without ever replacing human judgment in the courtroom.

LEGAL FINANCIAL OBLICATIONS

Led the Superior Court Judges' Association in supporting reduced legal financial obligations for people convicted of crimes, and continues to push to lower costs for indigent defendants.

JURY SELECTION BY VIDEO

Helped draft the rule enabling virtual jury selection and presided over the nation's first all-remote jury trial. King County is one of the only counties in the nation to select jurors this way, with hundreds selected over video.

PRE-TRIAL REFORM

Drawing on thousands of release decisions as King County's Chief Criminal Judge, advocates for fully funded pre-trial services and better data so judges aren't limited to a binary choice between total confinement and unsupervised release.
